It really has been a long time since I was a true bachelor. About ayear and a half ago I had about 3 and a half weeks where my wife went on an educational trip. Before that she went away for about six weeks or so nearly four years ago.
We’ve been married since late 2007 and since that time I’ve only had a smattering of times that I was home alone… and now with our son in the midst my opportunities for extended time to myself is wearing quite thin.
Right now my wife and son are heading up to Oregon to secure our eventual housing. As I noted in my last post we are moving to Oregon in short order and while I finish things up at my job here in SoCal she will be touring homes and finding us the best place possible to live.
The goal is to buy a decent place for a few years but not our ultimate long-term home. After a few the house we buy will become a rental and we will move again into a nicer and bigger place somewhere else.
There are obviously huge implications of this decision but in the immediate short term it means I get to experience life before wife and child one more time. Albeit it will only last for around 4 days or so but I’ll take it. Mostly because I can’t see something like this happening again for a long while.
In the future if my wife has to take any trips I will be holding down the fort with our son… and if we travel to see grandparents for a weekend I will be the one taking him while my wife stays at home and on the job.
So how am I spending my time?
Drunken night on the town maybe?
No, I went couponing to Food 4 Less, Albertsons, CVS, and Walgreens to pick up what I could for as little as possible. I am now making rice, carrots & mushrooms, and I will be shortly frying up some chicken (it’s thawing as I type this post).
Ohh yeah, and I am blogging.
At least I have a beer on the desk. At least I have that going for me.
Before I really get into the whole professional father mode I’ve started seeking out fellow stay-at-home-dads online today. I found a number of guys on Twitter this afternoon and will be doing some research on other blogging dads too in coming days and weeks.
I imagine I’ll be startign to reach out to some of them soon enough to have a bit of comraderie and then we’ll see how things go after the big move. I’m sure I’ll want to have some local friends in similar situations but that will have to wait until we arrive.
For now I’ll just keep blogging, cooking chicken, and enjoying the peace and silence of just a house full of cats.
If you are a stay at home dad or a work from home dad I’d love to hear from you. Let me know your there by dropping a line in the comments. Feel free to drop a link to your blog or twitter page if you have one. I’d love to get to know a community of guys in similar shoes as mine.
